Sorry, I'm "old generation" and don't even know how to move a controller.
I still read paper books, you know <blushes>.
LOL, just bumping the thread.

I'm from the 'younger generation' but I'm rubbish with controllers so I don't play games despite having an Xbox (the old type). Having said that I may reconsider now that the Xbox Kinect is out. No controllers to get me confused! Yay!

Long shot, but don't suppose anyone plays World of Warcraft? I'm not really much of a gamer, but I've just started playing it (free trial) and I was kinda hoping there'd be someone who was also a newbie to these things!

Wow well I'm a slightly more seasoned World of Warcraft gamer, so I'm happy to share any info that might be helpful. I've been playing for about 3 years now! what realm are you on Daydreamer?

I'm on Darkmoon Faire (same realm as my boyfriend - just so I would know *someone*). I'm mostly a PvE player, since the RP aspect of the realm is pretty limited to certain areas, it seems!

You can make up to 10 characters on each realm, but when you log in, you will choose which realm you want to be on. You can make friends and join a guild on that realm, and if you have a few characters it's useful if you want to send other toons gold or items.
The expansions expand the world, so if you just have the original game, there will be less places you can go, less you can do, and you can only level so far. Normal is 60 I think, the first expansion, Burning Crusade is up to 70, Lich King is 80 and Cataclysm is 85.
at Daydreamer: My main toons are on Arathor and I do PvE as well. I did start a toon on an RP server, but it didn't seem much different (but I didn't spend a lot of time there).

at dal828 - A realm is just like a community, there are lots to choose from. Each realm has the same game world, but they only see and interact with other people on their realm. You can make characters on different realms but they can't interact. Realms are categorised in ways for a certain kind of play -
PvE (Player vs Environment) is for people who specifically want to level their character from tasks and quests and monsters in the game world, rather than against other people. You're never forced to battle another person, or be killed by *someone* twenty levels higher.
PvP (Player vs Player) is for people who want to duel other players in addition to questing etc and in those ones other people can randomly attack and kill you while you're doing quests and such, so I've heard. (Don't know a lot about this one).
RP (roleplay) is for people who want to roleplay as their character, make a backstory etc as well as doing quests and so on.
I think that's generally how it works (I'm still learning, myself!) They aren't exclusive, as I'm sure people can PvP on other types of realm, if they choose to do. But you're not gonna get whacked by a Level 80 while you're running around if you don't activate that. The list of realms does tell you what category they are, and it can be mixed sometimes like RPPvP etc.
I only have original WoW and Burning Crusade at the moment. But you get a free month of gametime when you buy the game, which is what I'm on until the 31st!
I'm hoping to start a guild (a sort of club, with benefits for members and a special chat channel) specifically for new players, like myself, since a lot of the talk goes way above my head and it can be pretty overwhelming. My boyfriend's a WoW veteran so he'll hopefully help out with advice for people!
at Jayana - I didn't really understand how it all worked when I joined, but I'm the type to stick with one chracter until I reach a high level and feel like I know what I'm doing before I make alts (alternative characters/toons)! I was so pleased to hit Level 30 on this one, that I don't want to start all over again just yet! =)
