Why are we brits a nation of dog lovers?? I can't stand it when you go visiting friends who have dogs and let their dog sniff you or try licking, or jumping on you without trying to stop their beloved animal. When all the time I just want that foul smelling dog away from me. I don't know where it has been or what it last was licking Yuk!!! It could have been anything!!! Yuk YUK So why do dog owners think we are all lovey dovey with dogs.
I can't stand it when they let their dog lick them over their face and mouth how disgusting is that and having dogs in bed with them is beyond me!!!
Anyone else feel the same?
I apologise in advance if this offend anyone but these are my views

I agree with you there winnie, dogs with muddy paws jumping up at you, 'awww, he's just saying hello!'
I have cats, altogether much cleaner and independent animals!

I have both!
Personally I think anybody who does NOT like animals is not to be trusted! Or perhaps that should be pitied as they have not discovered the joy that animals can bring to one's life.
I have to admit tho' - an awful lot of society nowadays don't bother to train their dogs (or their kids!) - discipline is obviously a dirty word!!! Dogs don't want to be out of control or constantly getting punished for bad behaviour....it's up to humans to train them in what is permissible. Good dog owners never let their animals cause annoyance to others - it's the loutish element of society who are giving the good ones a bad name!!!
My husband and I rescue neglected, ill and old animals and our current girl is a 16 years old cat who was dumped with her sister at a friend's home because her owner was BORED with them!!!!! The sister had to be put to sleep as she was too ill but Domino, who is with us, was just saved. She had to have six teeth removed because of an infection and all her fur shaved off because of the knots and tangles : at She also has an eye infection so we have to bathe her eyes and put ointment in twice a day. She is also only 4lb 4oz in weight so I have to handfeed her to get her to eat! Yet despite this cruelty she is still very friendly!!!
Our dog was a cruelty case too and used as a punchbag by her owners....it's taken over 6 months to get her to trust folks.
Personally I don't think the UK is a nation of animal lovers anymore.....folk seem to worship pointless 'celebrities' and material goods nowadays instead of the things that really matter and animals are just throwaway items. There seems to be more respect for the latest phone or handbag than there is for a living breathing animal.
Give me a dog anyday....mine is wormed, vaccinated, neutered, microchipped, has her Kennel Club Gold Citizenship Award AND sleeps on my bed because she IS my best friend! And, unlike my husband who I do love dearly, she does not snore and pinch the duvet!!!
One little thing to consider to all those who think animals are dirty and unhygienic.....I'm 42 years old and had all manner of animals since I was 5 years old yet I have NEVER caught anything off them. Humans, on the other hand, have passed on all manner of diseases over the years - colds, chickenpox, mumps, measles etc etc. Society seems to be getting less tolerant of ANY type of animal being around....this planet is not just populated by humans!!!! PLEASE...be a little bit more tolerant!

Sorry, but I have one thing to say here, and you won't like it very much. They live in that house, you don't. If you don't like it, don't visit. Simple as that.
And Gilly...WELL SAID! I completely agree with you! And how awful about your pets stories. I'm so glad they've found a forever home with you. I have a rescue cat myself.

I don't like the idea of dogs licking peoples faces either.. it's not pleasant.
And I don't like it when you visit a friend or relative and the dog jumps up on you because they're all excited. More often than not, I'd give them a bit of a fuss, but sometimes you just dont want to be pounced on lol.
It's not the dogs fault though, just like if it smells. It's down to the owner to train, discipline and keep them clean.
When I lived back at home with mum, we had 2 yorkshire terriers, then a staffy (KC Registered). All very well behaved and clean.
I've now got 3 cats. 2 that were from a shelter because they were unwanted kittens with birth defects, and 1 that sort of adopted me about 5 or 6 years ago lol.

I have three dogs at present, all rescues because humans used them as punching bags, kicked, beaten, starved, one even shot with a pellet gun. Yet none of them fought back, one of them even kept watch for a weeks waiting for his other family to come back for him..
Humans bought them into this world and then abused them, humans betrayed the trust these dogs placed in them, humans caused their misery.
Yet the dogs remain faithful, trustworthy and loving.
They bring me joy, I never come home to moans or complaints, they are always pleased to see me they never moan about my weight, my clothes, my style, what I watch on TV, they dont care if I eat an extra biscuit they just hope I will share.
No dog has ever lied to me, betrayed my trust or been anything other than a friend and thats more than I can say about most of the humans Ive met so far.
Why do we love dogs so much? Maybe because they show more humanity on a daily basis than most humans manage in a lifetime.

Gilly why do you think people who do not like animals are not to be trusted or even pitied. I have had animals including dogs and rabbits to name but a few. But Istill don't like them licking or jumping up at me.

I noticed how many profiles have 'dog walking' as an interest! And how few have posted on this forum! Now either that means that not enough people read the forums, not enough folks can be bothered to write on the forums, or there are loads of members out there walking dogs who don't belong to them or that they don't like! Or maybe people just choose any old random stuff as interests when they write their profile cos they don't want to sound boring!
Oh, BTW, crufts is on at the moment, but you can only watch the highlights on more 4, the BBC refuse to televise it any more because of the cruelty involved in breeding certain dogs to have features that are detrimental to their health. Any thoughts?

I love dogs but Ive never bought a puppy. Simply because I know there are too many unwanted or unloved dogs out there who will be left in kennels/rescues or PTS if no one wants them.
Lets face it who wants a one year old, bad mannered, untrained, ugly, JRT cross whos brain damaged. No one... so he lives here where he is cherished.
Recently a report showed that in Holland there is now zero genetic diversity in Cavilier King charles spanials yet the breeders continue to churn them out even though its mating brother/sister father /daughter ect.
The public look at puppies and think ' ahhh cute', there are no checks or controls on who buys a dog, think about it you need a licence to own a TV or a car yet any muppet can buy a dog, a living breathing creature and just abandon it if it fails to meet requirements.
Sentencing for animal creulty is a joke most cases dont even reach the courts. The RSPCA have no powers of arrest or entry they cant even seize an animal unless a vet says the animal is suffering.
They are simply a charity trying to protect animals from human cruelty, with no real power and very little back up from the courts.
A nation of dog lovers no, both my country and the UK are simply nation's of dog owners, real dog lovers would put welfare first and profit or fashion second.

I think dogs are amazing. They make better companions than some humans! However, I do think owners should not let their dogs just jump up on everybody as they should realise that some people are not so fond of them. Discipline is key here. A person who is not so fond of dogs should say to a dog owner that they do not want dogs getting too friendly! Dogs do not realise what they are doing and are just being friendly. They do not understand our obsessions with so called cleanliness. They sniff each other's bums to say hello and roll in fox poo when they get a chance!

There is a way to stop this ... don't respond to the dog(s), keep your head up, don't look at them or make eye contact. You can push them away but don't actively engage with them or speak.
You can tell the owners to move their dogs though!
I am a dog lover but also believe that people should keep their dogs under control. I never let my dogs interact with anyone unless they make it clear that is what they want and is ok ... I mean would anyone let their CHILDREN jump all over anyone else? Nope, so dogs shouldn't be allowed to do it either.

Always have been & always will be a dog lover but thoroughly agree with the views re control. I'm the one who has to clean the house therefore I don't allow my dogs on the chairs nor upstairs & certainly won't allow them to jump up at others to either ruin clothes or more importantly to frighten & hence perpetuate the fear or dislike of canines!
Dogs are your friend for life giving unconditional love as the greatest companion one could wish for.
Finally, for those anti-pooches - who saw BBC Breakfast this morning regarding the puppy-trainers of dogs to aid people with disabilities??

There is a difference between an animal lover and a pet lover.
Personally i think the need to own a pet is an indication of a deeper need and signifies something lacking in one's life.

I got a dog this year for the first time ever (fluffy jack russell) and he sleeps on the bed with me every night, has his own place on the sofa, and is the best friend I ever had! Don't know how anyone can own a dog and keep them in a cage in the garden or shut them in all day while they go to work.I brush him and hoover every day and its not a problem.Love him to bits!
