In these times of austerity it seems more of us are holidaying in the UK. I personally think our seaside resorts are great, particularly for families; my favourite is Scarborough/Whitby. Scarborough for it's stereotypical "tackiness"(naff gift shops, eateries etc) and fantastic beaches, not to mention fond childhood memories;and Whitby for it's unspoilt traditional look; and of course for it's renowned fish and chips, yum yum!

Have you a favourite?

<3 Gee thanks for that vote of confidence in our Pembrokeshire Beaches folks
.
Having been born, bred and lived in this County for most of my (long??) life,I can vouch for the great majority of our delightful beaches, inlets, smuggler type Villages scattered around our very extensive coastline. The scenery from the encircling coastal path is breathtaking and surely offering panoramic views ,as good as anywhere else in the World. With an abundance of islands, bird and marine life always on offer.Plus a variety of water sports.

As for the favourite British seaside resort I would have to agree that the Jewel in the Crown has to be the glorious place known as Tenby. It offers 3 spectacular safe, sandy beaches that stretch and stretch!!The harbour with its backdrop of colourful Georgian Town houses behind is both quaint and very picturesque, leading into the vast expanse of the turquoise blue Carmarthen Bay beyond. It has graced very many artists easels over the centuries and is always a favourite picture on Calenders..The narrow cobbled streets retain an air of yester year, and altogether with its horse drawn carriage carrying the fortunate tourist in the summer seasons, and the award winning floral image this little Town offers it truly is deserved of its title, being very much a Jewel in the Crown here in Wales.Sparkling and welcoming.

Saundersfoot, on the otherhand, just around the coast is equally attractive but far more a beautiful Village.Having had the pleasure of living virtually on its seafront for some 25 years some may think I am biased - and indeed, perhaps they would be right!!! - because it is always a test of popularity if one can live in a place for that number of years and still praise the place!!
Again,a wonderful stretch of safe, golden sands offering the perfect place for the tiny tots - and their parent.Great clifftops worthy of exploring,a quaint hard working harbour,a beautiful old Church standing amidst swathes of our National flower, the daffodil. The coastal path and the myriad of footpaths abound, one need never travel that same route twice!!
The Village centre is overflowing during the summertime, all the gift shops, cafes, bars, leisure facilities tending to hover in this one same area.Further afield are ancient woodland offering the most amazing carpet of blue from the humble blue bell in season.Indeed,a destination not to be missed when visiting Pembrokeshire.

Why not come and see for yourselves?? *wave* *wave*

Have to agree with Coolbeanz and Dreamkeeper regarding Tenby; which was not far behind my favourite. We stayed in St.Davids a couple of years ago and spent three days visiting Tenby and it's wonderful beaches, great shops and eateries; we also enjoyed the above mentioned horse and carriage ride which was good fun although sadly too short in duration.

We really enjoy booking a coastal cottage in a different place each year, so I'm all ears for your personal recommendations, keep them coming... B)

I have an ongoing love affair with Littlehampton in West Sussex its a place we used to take the children to. It has great beaches and lovely friendly people.
There are the most beautiful villages in the area and loads of places to vist.
Its not glam or up market its not trendy or flash its just comfortable and nice a really good place for a family holiday.

I also like Cornwall our last visit there was to Polperro we walked along the cliff path and were lucky enough to see a huge basking shark feeding along the shoreline below.. A fantastic place for walkers bird spotting and photographers.

One of my favorite beaches is West Wittering, in West Sussex, especially in the winter, you can walk all along the sands to East Wittering, stop in the fantastic cafe for lunch and then walk all the way back. A wonderful day out

HAHA fellow West Wales-ians, you've beaten me to it as regards our beach resorts here! For beach-nothing-but-beach what about mentioning Freshwater West, Newgale & Whitesands. Anyone out there who has never visited this side of the country doesn't know what they are missing!! St.David's peninsula is just about as far west as you can get to watch the most magnificent sunsets! *rolleyes*
